Engagement Photographers in Utah Valley: How the Student-Photographer Market Works, What a Session Costs and How to Hire Well

Hiring an engagement photographer in Provo or Orem: student vs established photographers, published session prices, what to get in writing and timing the light.

Shopping for an engagement photographer in Utah Valley means choosing across a wide range: full-time studios, some of which share pricing only on request, and newer and student photographers who post a simple rate and fit sessions around class. Both can produce photos you love. Hiring well means knowing which kind you are hiring and what to get in writing either way.

This guide is about the engagement session. For wedding-day coverage, see our guide to choosing a wedding photographer; for where to shoot, our photo locations guide.

The student pipeline

Part of the supply comes from the university. BYU offers a Photo- and Lens-Based Design BFA, which its catalog describes as "a limited enrollment program requiring department admissions approval." Students apply first for pre-BFA status with an online portfolio, then apply to the professional program through a portfolio review held in June. The design department lists commercial work and "portrait (wedding/bridal/family/etc.) photography" among graduates' career paths.

That program sits alongside students in other majors who own a camera, recent graduates building businesses, and full-time studios. An engagement session is short and low-stakes compared with a wedding day, which makes it a natural place for a newer photographer to build a portfolio, and for a couple to take a chance on one.

The practical result for couples: choice at the low end of the price range, and a wide quality range within it.

What a session costs: published prices

Photographers either publish prices on a pricing page or ask you to request a brochure. A sample of published rates, as listed on the photographers' own sites in October 2026:

Photographer Area served Published price What it includes
Miranda Farnsworth Utah County and Salt Lake County Engagement session $300 Up to an hour, 35+ images in an online gallery, print release
Amanda Allison Photography Northern Utah Engagement sessions from $350 One hour, one location, two outfits, 50+ edited photos; travel fees may apply
MWAR Photography Salt Lake City, "serving Utah & beyond" Couples sessions from $350 Pricing page mentions a one-hour session and up to two outfit changes

Branson Maxwell Photography & Videography, which lists engagements among its services, asks couples to request a pricing brochure through a form rather than posting rates, as do some other established studios.

These are examples, not a survey. Prices change, and "from" means the lowest package. Read what is included before comparing two numbers: an hour with 35 images and an hour with 50 images are different products, and so is a session with or without travel to your chosen location.

The things that move the price

Finding photographers

Look at portfolios, then full galleries. A portfolio shows a photographer's best 20 frames from 50 sessions. A full gallery from one session shows what you will receive. Ask for two complete engagement galleries, ideally in light similar to yours (evening, winter, overcast).

Look locally. The Provo.com classifieds have a Services category for "tutoring, moving help, photography, repairs," described as "neighbors offering work rather than businesses buying placement." Posting is free. Photographers can list sessions, and couples can post what they want and when. The board is at /classifieds/. Provo.com also runs a paid wedding vendor directory for businesses.

Look at wedding expos. Photographers exhibit at the valley's bridal shows, which is a chance to see printed work and meet several in an afternoon. Our bridal expos guide lists them, and our wedding vendor contracts guide explains the federal three-day cancellation rule that can apply to contracts signed at an expo.

Do not rely on star ratings alone. Ratings for wedding photographers cluster near five stars. Read what reviewers say about direction, communication and delivery time, which tell you more than the stars.

Hiring a student or new photographer

Hiring someone early in their career can mean great photos at a lower price. It also shifts more of the risk to you. A few habits protect both of you:

  1. See full galleries, not a highlight reel.
  2. Agree in writing on the date, location, time, price, number of edited images, delivery date and what happens if either of you cancels. A text thread is better than nothing; a simple written agreement is better than a text thread.
  3. Pay a small deposit, then the balance at the session or on delivery. Paying the full amount months ahead to someone without a track record is the riskiest version.
  4. Ask about backup files. Do they shoot to two memory cards? Where are your images stored until delivery?
  5. Ask about the print release. Without one, a print shop may refuse to print professional-looking images.

If the photographer is running a regular business in Provo, the city may require a business license; our Provo business license guide covers when.

What to get in writing, whoever you hire

Timing the light

Many engagement photographers plan around the last hour of daylight. Sunset in Provo shifts by four hours over the year. Times from the U.S. Naval Observatory for Provo:

Date Sunset End of civil twilight
Sat, Dec 12, 2026 5:01 p.m. 5:31 p.m.
Sat, Dec 19, 2026 5:03 p.m. 5:34 p.m.
Sat, Jun 5, 2027 8:53 p.m. 9:25 p.m.
Sat, Jun 19, 2027 8:59 p.m. 9:32 p.m.
Sat, Jul 17, 2027 8:54 p.m. 9:26 p.m.
Sat, Aug 14, 2027 8:25 p.m. 8:54 p.m.

Two consequences. A December session at golden hour starts around 4 p.m., so a student with a 3 p.m. class has a narrow window. A June session runs late into the evening, after the heat of the day has eased; our summer weddings guide has the temperature curve.

Terrain complicates it. Canyon locations can fall into shade well before the official sunset because the canyon walls block the low sun. Ask your photographer how they plan around that at the specific spot.

Engagements, bridals and the wedding day

Engagement photos are a couple's session, usually taken months before the wedding, used for the announcement, the save-the-date and the wedding website. Our invitations guide covers when you need the images for printing. What the printing itself costs, by quantity, is in our announcement prices guide.

Bridals, sometimes called formals, are portraits in wedding attire before the wedding day. They let couples get portraits without the time pressure of a temple-day schedule. Some photographers price them separately; some include them in a wedding package. Our wedding photography prices guide shows both, from nine photographers' published price pages.

First sessions are rehearsals. An engagement session is the cheapest way to learn whether you like a photographer's direction before hiring them for the wedding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an engagement session cost in Utah Valley?
Prices vary widely. Among photographers who publish rates, as listed on their own sites in October 2026: Miranda Farnsworth, serving Utah County and Salt Lake County, lists an engagement session at $300 for up to an hour with 35 or more images and a print release; Amanda Allison Photography, serving northern Utah, lists engagement sessions starting at $350 for one hour, one location, two outfits and 50 or more edited photos; MWAR Photography in Salt Lake City lists couples sessions starting at $350. Some established studios share pricing only on request.
Are student photographers in Provo any good?
Some are excellent and some are learning. BYU's Photo- and Lens-Based Design BFA is a limited-enrollment program with a portfolio review, and its department lists portrait work, including wedding and bridal photography, among graduates' career paths. Judge any photographer, student or not, by full galleries rather than a highlight reel.
Where can I find a local photographer on Provo.com?
The Provo.com classifieds have a Services category for neighbors offering work, including photography. It is free to post, so photographers can list sessions and couples can post a request. Provo.com also runs a paid wedding vendor directory.
What should be in an engagement photography agreement?
The price and what it includes (time, locations, outfit changes, number of edited images), the delivery date, the deposit and what happens to it if either side cancels, what happens in bad weather, and your rights to print and share the photos. Get it in writing, even for a $200 session.
What is a print release?
Written permission from the photographer to print your images. Photographers generally keep the copyright; a print release lets you take files to any printer. Some Utah Valley photographers list a print release as included in their session price.
When is the best time of day for engagement photos in Utah Valley?
Many photographers schedule around the last hour before sunset. In Provo, the U.S. Naval Observatory puts sunset at 8:59 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2027, and 5:01 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2026. Winter sessions end before many people leave work.
What is the difference between engagement photos and bridals?
Engagement photos are a couple's session, usually months before the wedding, used for announcements and the website. Bridals, sometimes called formals, are portraits in wedding attire before the wedding day. Some photographers price them separately and some bundle them with wedding coverage.
Do I need permission to take photos at temples or parks?
Sometimes. State parks charge entry, some city parks and gardens require a reservation or fee for formal shoots, and temple grounds have their own expectations. Our photo locations guide covers the permissions by location.
