March in Utah Valley

The unreliable month — winter and spring in the same week.

What March is actually like here

March in Utah Valley is not a spring month pretending to be winter; it is genuinely both, sometimes within a day. The valley floor can be dry and mild while the canyons are still full, which makes this the month people misjudge most often — a trail that looks clear at the mouth of Provo Canyon can be deep snow and ice a mile up. It is a poor month for planning outdoor certainty and an excellent one for taking what the week gives you. Culturally, March is busy: it is late enough in the semester that university arts and athletics programming is at full tilt, and both campuses run toward finals from here. The first outdoor gatherings of the year start appearing at the end of the month if the weather cooperates, and they get rescheduled if it does not.

Weather, roughly. Wildly variable. Warm, dry afternoons and heavy wet snow are both normal, sometimes in the same week. Assume canyon trails are still under snow. Our Provo weather guide has the detail, including why the elevation makes this valley behave differently from what the forecast number suggests.

Planning further out

This page is evergreen: it shows whatever is next in March, whichever year that turns out to be. The farthest-future date on the Provo.com calendar right now is December 8, 2028. Most Utah Valley calendars stop caring past thirty days, which is precisely why planning a trip or a weekend around one of them does not work.
