What May is actually like here
May is the month Utah Valley belongs to the people who live here year-round. Both universities have emptied, spring and summer terms carry a fraction of the population, and traffic, parking and restaurant waits all drop noticeably. Meanwhile the mountains are opening: the lower canyon trails come into condition, the Provo River runs high with snowmelt — which makes it beautiful and genuinely dangerous — and the alpine roads begin their staged seasonal opening as the snow retreats. It is the best month of the year for someone who wants the scenery without either the winter access problem or the July crowds. Outdoor event season starts in earnest at the end of the month.
