What January is actually like here
Utah Valley in January is the version of itself that tourists never plan for and residents quietly like. Both universities are back mid-month, so the town refills after the December emptying, but the visitor traffic is gone. This is peak season in the canyons above the valley rather than in it: Sundance Mountain Resort is running, the Nordic and snowshoe trails are in, and the drive up Provo Canyon is at its most dramatic. Down on the valley floor the tradeoff is inversion — cold air settles under a lid of warmer air and holds the pollution in, sometimes for a week or more, which is why locals talk about going up to get out of it rather than staying in for the weather. Indoors is where the month's programming lives: university arts seasons resume, the Covey Center and the SCERA carry winter shows, and restaurants are as easy to get into as they will be all year.
Weather, roughly. Cold and often gray on the valley floor, with highs commonly near or below freezing and the inversion doing more to make it unpleasant than the temperature does.
