New Year's Eve in Utah Valley: Countdowns, Fireworks & Kids (2026)

New Year's Eve in Utah Valley has a shape that people from elsewhere do not expect, and it is worth describing before listing the events. This is a place with an unusually large number of families with small children, an unusually small number of bars, two university campuses that are empty for the holiday, and a religious majority whose idea of a New Year's Eve party is a stake center gym with a DJ and a table of root beer. The result is a December 31 that runs early — the biggest fireworks in the county go off at 9 p.m., not midnight — and that has, for the last decade or so, developed a good set of family events alongside a thin but real adult scene, with Salt Lake City to the north for anyone who wants a proper downtown countdown.

This guide is organized by who you are going out with: little kids, big kids, adults, or nobody. It covers the recurring events as they have run in recent years, since most of them are announced only in December and none of the 2026 details were published when we wrote this in early September. Where an event has a track record, we say so; where it was a one-off or run by an outside promoter, we say that too. Confirm dates and tickets in December, and read the last section on getting home before you plan anything that ends after midnight.

The 9 p.m. Fireworks: Provo's Family Countdown

The anchor event of New Year's Eve in Utah County is the party the City of Provo throws at the Provo Recreation Center, 320 West 500 North. It has run under a different theme each year (a "2024 Disco Countdown" with a silent disco, line dancing, and a circus show, then a "2025 Circus Countdown" with acrobats and a hypnotist), and the format underneath the theme is stable. The 2024 edition ran from 7 p.m. to midnight, with jump houses, laser tag, performers, and a dance floor. Fireworks go off at 9 p.m., timed for the families with bedtimes, and again at midnight for everyone who stayed. Tickets were $10 for the 2025 edition.

Two practical notes. The 9 p.m. show draws a large crowd from the surrounding neighborhoods who do not buy a ticket; if you want to see the fireworks and not the party, the streets and parks around the rec center work fine. And buy tickets early in December once they are posted. Orem, Lehi, and the other cities have not run a comparable municipal party in recent years, and the smaller cities tend to leave New Year's Eve to the churches and the private venues. If you live in the north county, Thanksgiving Point's New Year's night, below, is the equivalent.

Noon Year's Eve, for the Under-Sixes

If you have a three-year-old, the real New Year's Eve happens at noon. Noon Year's Eve — a countdown to 12:00 p.m. with a balloon drop, party hats, and sparkling cider, so that a toddler gets the full ritual and is asleep by 8 — has become one of the most reliable family events in the valley, and several venues run one.

Provo Beach, the indoor entertainment center at the Riverwoods in Provo, has hosted a Noon Year's Eve from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a DJ, a reptile show, face painting, and a balloon drop at noon; it was free in 2024, and the 2023 edition promised more than 1,200 balloons. Classic Fun Center in Orem has run a kids' party for ages 16 and under. The public libraries occasionally do a low-key storytime countdown; the Spanish Fork Public Library has held a family story time that counts down to the new year at 11:59 a.m.

These events fill. A noon balloon drop for toddlers is exactly the kind of thing every young family in Utah County wants at once, so check each venue's calendar in mid-December and buy tickets where they are required. Luminaria on New Year's Night

Thanksgiving Point's Luminaria — the Christmas light walk through the Ashton Gardens, which our Luminaria guide covers in detail — runs past Christmas into January; the 2026-27 season runs November 12 to January 9 and closes Sundays, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. In recent years New Year's Eve has included fireworks, and the 2024 New Year's Eve added a fireworks and ice show at 8 p.m., weather permitting. It is a timed-entry ticket, and it is one of the most convenient combinations in the county of lights, fireworks, a warm car, and home by 10.

If you are choosing between the Provo rec center party and Luminaria's New Year's night: the rec center is louder, cheaper, and indoors; Luminaria is quieter, more expensive, and a walk in the cold. For a family with kids under eight, the rec center's 9 p.m. show is easier. For a couple or a family with older kids who want the gardens, Luminaria is the one people talk about afterward.

Sundance and the Mountain Parties

Sundance's Owl Bar has hosted New Year's Eve parties in recent years: a "Rhinestone Cowboy NYE" with live music for 2023, and a 21-and-up honky-tonk night from 9 p.m. to midnight with a $15 cover for 2025. The torchlight parade — ski instructors descending the mountain at dusk carrying flares, followed by fireworks — is a New Year's Eve tradition at several Utah resorts. Alta, Solitude, and Snowbird in the Cottonwood Canyons have held one, and Deer Valley has too. Solitude lists its 2026 New Year's Eve torchlight parade and fireworks for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on December 31 at the Last Chance Lodge, early enough that you can be home before the roads get late-night crowded. The caveat with any mountain party is the drive down. Provo Canyon and the Cottonwoods on New Year's Eve combine ice, darkness, holiday traffic, and a share of drivers who should not be driving. The people who do a Sundance party well stay the night; the people who do a torchlight parade well leave right after the fireworks, before the crowd.

The Adult Scene, Such As It Is

Provo is not a nightlife city, and New Year's Eve does not change that, but there is more than there used to be.

One of the larger adult events in recent years has been a ticketed, 18-and-up countdown party at Provo Towne Centre, Countdown NYE, which launched for 2025 from promoters The Tribe and Overtime with a 50-foot-tall stage, photo booths, and a VIP area. It was a promoter event, not a city one, which means it returns only if the promoters decide it does; watch for an announcement in early December. Classic Fun Center in Orem has run a 16-and-up party from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with a midnight balloon drop, and the bars in Provo and the neighboring cities have hosted live music and DJ sets on the 31st. The restaurants are the other adult option, and in this valley they are the more common one. A number of the sit-down restaurants in Provo and Orem have served a New Year's Eve dinner, sometimes with a fixed menu, so reserve early in December. New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, which means the restaurants that would be open on a normal Thursday night will be open, and the ones that close on Sunday will be open too; the constraint is reservations, not hours. Most close by 10 or 11 and leave the countdown to you.

For a big-city downtown countdown, the answer is Salt Lake, but read the last section first: getting home late from Salt Lake on New Year's Eve without a car is hard.

Youth Dances, YSA Dances, and the Stake Centers

By attendance, the largest category of New Year's Eve event in Utah County is one you will not find on any event listing: the church dances. Latter-day Saint stakes across the valley hold New Year's Eve dances for teenagers — typically ages 14 through 18, in a stake center's cultural hall, with a DJ, a dress standard, and a midnight countdown — and separately for young single adults, the 18-to-30 group that makes up so much of Provo's population. They are announced through wards and the church's own channels, not through public calendars. The mid-singles and single-adult groups — the over-30 side of the same structure — sometimes organize their own New Year's Eve gatherings, and the institutes of religion near the campuses occasionally host something for the students who stayed in town. These are the events that make Provo's New Year's Eve feel oddly full even though the bars are quiet.

Fireworks Laws, in Winter

Utah law sets the windows for consumer fireworks. In winter, you may light them from 11 a.m. on December 31 until 1 a.m. on January 1, then from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on January 1, and from 11 a.m. on Chinese New Year's Eve until 1 a.m. the next day. The class you can buy at a Utah fireworks stand is legal to light during those windows, subject to city restrictions. Cities may close hazardous areas, such as foothills, brush, areas within 200 feet of waterways, trails, and canyons, and the wildland interface, and must publish a description or map of any closed area. Lighting fireworks outside the legal times or in a closed area is an infraction with a fine of up to $1,000. State law allows sales from December 29 through December 31, so if you did not stock up in July, the seasonal stands reopen then.

The practical guidance is the same as in July, with ice added: a driveway or a cul-de-sac away from dry vegetation, a bucket of water, and someone sober lighting them. New Year's Day, Which Is a Different Day

January 1 is a federal holiday, but it is not Christmas. The big-box stores and grocery chains open, some on shortened hours; most restaurants that would be open on a Sunday are open, and a number that would not be — since the 1st is a Friday in 2027 — are open too. Banks, government offices, the post office, the libraries, and both universities are closed. UTA runs no bus, TRAX, or FrontRunner service on New Year's Day. The ski resorts are open and busy.

Two local New Year's Day traditions are worth knowing. The polar plunge — an organized or informal jump into a very cold body of water — happens at Utah Lake and at some of the reservoirs, sometimes as a fundraiser, and it is exactly as unpleasant as it sounds. And the college football bowl games on the 1st are a valley-wide television event, doubly so in the years BYU is playing on or near the date; our Delta Center guide is not that, but the sports bars and the restaurants with screens fill for the afternoon games.

Getting Home

This is the section that matters most, and the one to read before you decide what to do.

Utah's legal blood or breath alcohol limit for driving is 0.05, the lowest in the United States, and police watch for impaired drivers on New Year's Eve. At that limit, a single drink is enough to put a small person over, and two drinks over an evening will put most people over. The roads on the night of the 31st add ice, fog from the inversion, and the canyon descents from Sundance and the Cottonwoods. None of this is a reason not to go out; it is a reason to plan the ride before the party.

Do not plan on the train for a midnight countdown in Salt Lake. UTA has said it does not run special late-night hours for New Year's Eve; for the 2023 holiday, when New Year's Eve fell on a Sunday, buses and TRAX ran a Sunday schedule and FrontRunner did not run at all. Uber and Lyft work in Utah Valley on New Year's Eve, with two caveats: surge pricing after midnight is severe, and wait times in Provo and Orem can be long after midnight. Booking a scheduled ride in advance helps. From Sundance or the Cottonwoods, ride-share availability is poor and the fare is high; the resort shuttles and the lodging are the real answer up there.

The designated driver is still the most reliable plan in a valley where a large share of any group does not drink anyway. Settle it before you leave the house, not at 11:45.

The Calendar, Stacked

Put the recurring events on a single evening and December 31 in Utah Valley looks like this. Late morning: the Noon Year's Eve balloon drops at Provo Beach and the play centers. Noon: the countdown for the under-sixes. Afternoon: the last ski runs, the last grocery run, the restaurants' early seatings. Dusk, around 6 to 7:30: the torchlight parades at the resorts that hold them. Evening, from 7: the Provo rec center party opens; Luminaria's evening timed entries continue; the church youth dances start; the restaurants' second seatings. 9 p.m.: the first fireworks at the rec center, and the moment half the valley goes home. 10 to midnight: the adult parties downtown and in Salt Lake, the YSA dances, the resort parties. Midnight: the second rec center show, the countdown everywhere, the consumer fireworks in the cul-de-sacs, which must stop by 1 a.m. 12:30: the surge-priced ride home.

Then January 1, a Friday, when the stores open and the mountains fill and the year starts the way it does here — early, cold, and with everybody's kids already awake.
