Moving from New York to Utah Valley: A Flat Income Tax, a Lower Sales Tax, a Car You Will Probably Need, and Five Flights a Day to JFK

Moving from New York to Utah Valley: Utah's flat 4.45% income tax against New York's brackets, a 7.42% average sales tax, the 3% grocery tax, cars and flights to JFK.

From New York, the move to Utah Valley changes almost everything at once: the taxes, the commute, the pace and the size of the place. Taxes mostly go down. The car, for most households, comes back. Here is the New York-specific list; for the general newcomer checklist, see our Moving to Provo guide. We read the Tax Foundation's 2026 tables, the Utah Code, the Utah DMV and flight listings on October 20, 2026.

The income tax flattens

New York State (2026, single) Utah (2026)
Structure Nine brackets Flat
Rates 3.9% up to 10.9% 4.45%
Rate on income from $13,900 to $80,650 5.4% 4.45%
Local income tax New York City and Yonkers have their own None

New York figures are from the Tax Foundation's table as of January 1, 2026; Utah's rate is in Utah Code 59-10-104. On $80,000 of taxable income, New York State's brackets come to about $4,155 before credits; Utah's flat rate comes to $3,560, and Utah's taxpayer credit lowers it further for most households. If you lived in New York City, add the city tax you will no longer pay.

File part-year returns in both states for the year you move, and keep proof of your move date.

The car comes back

Utah Valley has transit: FrontRunner commuter rail runs north to Salt Lake City, and UTA's UVX bus rapid transit links Provo and Orem. Our FrontRunner commuting guide explains it. But most errands, schools and jobs assume a car.

When you buy or bring one, register within 60 days of becoming a resident (Utah Code 41-1a-202). Utah County requires an emissions test for many gasoline vehicles, including model years 1996 through 2020, 2022 and 2024 on the DMV's current schedule. Our Provo DMV guide and car insurance in Utah cover the paperwork.

Housing

Rent and home prices are far below New York City's. Zillow's observed rent index for Provo was $1,575 a month in September 2026; see average rent in Provo for every measure. If you plan to buy, how much house you can afford works the math at current rates. Utah taxes a primary residence on 55% of its value (Utah Code 59-2-103); see our property tax guide.

Pace, culture and winter

Utah County is family-centered, quiet at night and more uniformly Latter-day Saint than anywhere in New York. Read moving to Provo when you're not LDS for the honest picture. Winters are snowy, and most years bring a few weeks of inversion, when cold air traps pollution in the valley.

Yes. Utah's rate is a flat 4.45% for tax year 2026. New York's 2026 single-filer brackets, in the Tax Foundation's table, run from 3.9% to 10.9%, and New York City residents also pay a city income tax that the table leaves out.
How much would I save on $80,000 of income?
On $80,000 of taxable income, New York State's brackets come to about $4,155 before credits and Utah's flat rate to $3,560. New York City residents would save more, because Utah has no city income tax.

On average. The Tax Foundation's average combined rate was 8.54% in New York and 7.42% in Utah as of July 1, 2026.
Does Utah tax groceries?

Do I need a car in Utah Valley?
Most households do. FrontRunner commuter rail runs from Provo north to Salt Lake City and Ogden, and UTA buses and the UVX line serve Provo and Orem, but much of the county is built around driving.
How many flights are there from Salt Lake City to New York?
FlightsFrom listed about 35 nonstop flights a week to JFK in October 2026, four a day on Delta and one on JetBlue, about four and a half hours. It also listed a weekly Delta flight to LaGuardia beginning December 19, 2026.
Will I need to register my car and get it tested?
Yes. New residents have 60 days to register under Utah Code 41-1a-202, and Utah County requires emissions tests for many gasoline model years.
Will rent be cheaper?
Compared with New York City, almost certainly. Zillow's observed rent index for Provo was $1,575 a month in September 2026; our average rent guide has the detail by city.
