Moving from Colorado to Utah Valley: Nearly the Same Income Tax, a Lower Sales Tax, a Grocery Tax, and Denver 21 Flights a Day Away

Moving from Colorado to Utah Valley: income tax almost unchanged (4.40% vs 4.45%), sales tax lower on average, groceries taxed at 3%, and about 147 weekly flights to Denver.

Colorado to Utah is the move where the mountains, the snow and the outdoor habits stay the same and the details shift. The income tax is nearly identical, the sales tax is a bit lower on average, and groceries pick up a small tax. The bigger change is cultural. Here is what changes for a Coloradan; for the general newcomer list, see our Moving to Provo guide. We read the Tax Foundation's 2026 tables, the Utah Code, the Utah DMV and flight listings on October 20, 2026.

Income tax: a wash

Colorado Utah
Rate (2026) 4.40% flat 4.45% flat

Colorado's figure is from the Tax Foundation's table as of January 1, 2026; Utah's from Utah Code 59-10-104. On a given income the difference is small, and Utah's taxpayer credit can move it either way. File part-year returns in both states for the year you move.

Sales tax: lower on average, higher on groceries

Colorado Utah
State rate 2.90% 6.10% (includes a 1.25% statewide local add-on)

The car. Register within 60 days (Utah Code 41-1a-202). Utah County tests many gasoline vehicles for emissions; our Provo DMV guide covers the steps.

Mountains, snow and the inversion

The outdoor life carries over. Sundance sits in Provo Canyon, and the Cottonwood Canyons resorts are about an hour to an hour and 20 minutes from Provo; start with our ski guide if you are choosing a pass. One difference Front Range residents notice: Utah Valley is a bowl between the Wasatch and Utah Lake, and most winters bring a few weeks of inversion, when cold air traps pollution. Lawns here often run on a separate irrigation system; see secondary water by city.

Getting back to Colorado

FlightsFrom listed about 147 nonstop flights a week from Salt Lake City to Denver on United, Southwest, Delta and Frontier in October 2026, roughly 1 hour 25 minutes to 2 hours in the air. That is about 21 a day, so a trip home rarely requires planning around a schedule. See flying SLC from Utah Valley for the drive to the airport.

Work and community

Utah Valley's tech corridor, Silicon Slopes, centers on Lehi; see Silicon Slopes, explained. Socially, Utah County is far more uniformly Latter-day Saint than Denver or Boulder. Read moving to Provo when you're not LDS for the honest version, or how wards work if you are a member.
