Moving from Nevada to Utah Valley: A New State Income Tax, a Lower Sales Tax, and Las Vegas an Hour and Forty-Five Minutes Away by Air

Moving from Nevada to Utah Valley: Utah's 4.45% income tax, a lower sales tax, a 3% grocery tax, the emissions test and flights back to Las Vegas and Reno.

Most moves into Utah Valley change the tax picture a little. A move from Nevada changes it in a single direction: for the first time, your paycheck will have state income tax withheld. Almost everything else gets a little cheaper, more familiar or both. Here is what changes for a Nevadan; for the general newcomer list, from utilities to schools, see our Moving to Provo guide. We read the Tax Foundation's 2026 tables, the Utah Code, the Utah DMV and flight schedule listings on October 20, 2026.

The income tax arrives

Nevada does not tax individual income. Utah does, at a flat 4.45% for tax year 2026 (Utah Code 59-10-104), and Utah's taxpayer credit reduces the bill for most households. On $80,000 of taxable income, a flat 4.45% is $3,560 before credits.

The year you move, file a Utah part-year resident return for the income you earn after becoming a resident. There is no Nevada return to close out.

The sales tax goes down

The Tax Foundation's figures as of July 1, 2026:

Nevada Utah
State rate 6.85% 6.10% (includes a 1.25% statewide local add-on)
Average local rate 1.39% 1.32%
Average combined rate 8.24% 7.42%

The exception is groceries. Utah taxes grocery food at a statewide 3%, according to the Utah State Tax Commission. Nevada is not among the eight states AARP lists as taxing groceries in 2026. For a family that spends heavily at the grocery store, that partly offsets the lower general rate.

Your house and your car

Property tax. Utah taxes a primary residence on 55% of its market value, thanks to a 45% residential exemption (Utah Code 59-2-103). Our property tax guide and first-year homeowner calendar explain the deadlines.

The car. You have 60 days after becoming a resident to register in Utah (Utah Code 41-1a-202). Utah County requires an emissions test for many gasoline vehicles: model years 1996 through 2020, 2022 and 2024 as of the DMV's current page, with electric vehicles and motorcycles exempt. Our Provo DMV guide has the steps, and car insurance in Utah covers coverage.

Weather, water and air

Las Vegans trade a desert summer for four seasons. Utah Valley gets real winters, with valley snow and cold mornings, and most winters bring a few weeks of inversion, when cold air traps pollution in the valley. Water will feel more familiar: many Utah County cities run a second, untreated irrigation system for lawns, with its own season and meters. See secondary water by city.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Utah have a state income tax? Nevada doesn't.
Yes. Utah taxes income at a flat 4.45% for tax year 2026 under Utah Code 59-10-104, withheld from each paycheck. Nevada has no individual income tax, so this is the biggest money change for most Nevadans.
Is sales tax lower in Utah than in Nevada?
On average, yes. The Tax Foundation's figures as of July 1, 2026 put the average combined state and local rate at 8.24% in Nevada and 7.42% in Utah.
Does Utah tax groceries?
Yes, at a reduced rate. The Utah State Tax Commission says the statewide grocery food rate is 3%. Nevada is not among the states AARP lists as taxing groceries in 2026, so your grocery bill will carry a tax it did not before.
How often can I fly back to Las Vegas or Reno?
Often. FlightsFrom listed about 65 nonstop flights a week from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas on Delta, Southwest and Frontier, about an hour and 45 minutes, and about 27 a week to Reno on Delta. Breeze also flies nonstop from Provo to Las Vegas.
Will my car need an emissions test in Utah County?
Most gasoline cars do. Utah County requires emissions tests for many model years, including 1996 through 2020, 2022 and 2024, according to the Utah DMV. New residents have 60 days to register.
Is Utah Valley's weather much different from Las Vegas?
Yes. Expect real winters with valley snow and cold, and a few weeks of poor winter air during inversions.
How does property tax work in Utah?
A primary residence is taxed on 55% of its market value, because Utah Code 59-2-103 allows a 45% residential exemption. Our property tax guide explains the rest.
Should I file a Utah return the year I move?
Yes, a part-year resident return for the income earned after you became a Utah resident. Nevada has no state return to file.
