The Eccles Theater is on Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City, about 45 miles from Provo. The easiest way in is the Regent Street Garage right behind it or the TRAX stop half a block away. The bigger planning questions for a Utah Valley family are when to leave, what to leave in the car, and how you will get home.

What the Eccles is
The theater's full name is the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater, which is how its official site writes it. The Salt Lake County Arts venue page says the architects, Pelli Clarke Pelli, drew on southern Utah landscapes in designing the main hall, and that the theater inspired the renovation and revitalization of Regent Street, just east of the venue. That page also refers to the theater's 10th anniversary season.
It has two performance spaces:
- Delta Performance Hall, the main house. Salt Lake County Arts lists a capacity of 2,501, a proscenium 50 feet wide and a configurable orchestra pit. Use the seat map for your own show.
- Regent Street Black Box, a smaller room with a listed capacity of 160 standing-seat, according to Salt Lake County Arts.
Tickets are sold through ArtTix, the Salt Lake County Arts box office. The ticket office is at 131 S. Main St. and lists hours of Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the venue page adding that it opens 90 minutes before any event. Sunday office hours are not listed. The phone is (801) 355-ARTS (2787).
Shows change by season, so check the venue's calendar for the lineup. This guide covers getting there, parking and rules, not what is playing. The Eccles site says Live! at the Eccles is presented by Magic Space Entertainment with First Tracks Entertainment and Salt Lake County Arts and Culture, and that Broadway Across America and its predecessors have brought touring Broadway shows to Utah for more than 25 years.
Who should skip it
Skip the Eccles if you want a short, cheap, low-logistics evening. A downtown show means 45 miles each way, parking or a train, a bag check at the door and, for most families, a late return. If you want theater without the drive, our live theater in Utah Valley guide and our guides to Hale Center Theater Orem and the SCERA Shell cover options near home.
Skip driving, specifically, if you are a student without a car or a family with young children who sleep in the car at 9 p.m. The train handles the first. For the second, plan a rested ride, not a late one. The Provo vs. Salt Lake City guide explains how different the two cities feel on an event night.
Parking
The theater's website calls the Regent Street Garage, at 55 East 200 South, just behind the theater, the preferred option, and says it is now partnered with ParkWhiz so you can pre-purchase parking and save time at the gates. Salt Lake County Arts lists event parking at that garage at $10 for weekday events after 5 p.m. or on weekends. Prices can change by event, so check the ParkWhiz listing for your date.
The City Creek Center garage gives the first two hours free, according to both the theater and Salt Lake County Arts, and the theater's site links to City Creek's parking page for details. The theater's parking page lists these other garages and lots:
- City Creek Parking, 50 S Temple
- Walker Center Parking, 160 Regent St
- 222 S Main Parking Garage, 222 S Main St
- Gallivan Center, 239 S Main St
- Wells Fargo Building, 299 S Main St
- Kearns Building, 136 S Main St
- Ampco 170 Garage, 170 S Main St
- Hotel Monaco, 15 W 200 S
- American Plaza Garage, 51 W 200 S
- Ampco 175 Garage, 175 S West Temple
- Downtown Marriott, 75 S West Temple
- The Salt Palace, 200 W West Temple
The theater's site does not list prices for those, so check each operator. It also does not describe drop-off options. Street parking is metered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a two-hour maximum, according to Salt Lake County Arts. It is free on Saturday during the same hours with the same two-hour maximum, and unrestricted on Sunday and after 8 p.m. on weekdays. A two-hour limit will not cover most shows, so treat street spots as a gamble.
Our advice for a Utah Valley driver is simple. Pre-purchase the Regent Street spot if you want certainty, or pick City Creek if you want to eat or walk first and can finish the free two hours. Arrive earlier than you think. The Eccles venue page says nothing about door times, so check your ticket or the venue before assuming. Build in time for security even if your garage is close.
By train
Take the Green or Blue Line to City Center Station, according to Salt Lake County Arts. The theater says the stop at City Creek Center is half a block north. The theater's site says your ArtTix ticket works as your UTA transit pass on the performance day, for buses, TRAX, FrontRunner, On Demand and the S-Line. Show your paper or digital ticket from your ArtTix Wallet to the bus driver or train host. The ticket date must match your travel date.
From Utah Valley, the usual chain is FrontRunner from Provo Central to Salt Lake Central, then TRAX. Our FrontRunner from Provo guide and day-trip guide put the ride at about an hour and five minutes, running every 30 minutes at weekday peaks and hourly midday and on Saturdays, with no Sunday service. UTA's own page lists service Monday through Saturday, with 30-minute weekday peak frequency and hourly off-peak service. We did not confirm which TRAX line to board from Salt Lake Central for City Center, so use UTA's trip planner.
Without an ArtTix ticket, UTA's fare page lists TRAX at $2.50 one way and a $5 day pass for local services. FrontRunner is priced by station: $2.50 for the first plus $0.60 for each additional station, up to $9.70 from Provo to Ogden. The ArtTix pass covers all of that on the day of the show if your ticket came through ArtTix. For fare details, see our UTA fares guide, and for boarding in Utah County, our station-by-station guide.
The weak point is the ride home. Hourly midday service means a missed train costs an hour, and a long show or encore can put you on the platform after the last southbound departure. Look up the last train from Salt Lake Central before you leave Provo. If you are riding on a Sunday, FrontRunner is not an option, and our FrontRunner guide suggests driving to a TRAX park-and-ride in Salt Lake County instead.
Driving from Provo
It is about 45 miles up I-15. Our I-15 commuter guide puts a free-flowing drive at a little under an hour from Provo's FrontRunner station area to downtown, with rush hour adding to that. The guide also covers the express lane rules and construction through 2027 and 2028. For an evening show, leave early enough to cover the Point of the Mountain at the end of the workday, park, and still have time for security. On the way home, the drive usually beats the train for a late show.
Rules and accessibility
Salt Lake County Arts lists these rules for Delta Performance Hall and the Regent Street Black Box.
Bags and backpacks over 12 x 12 x 6 inches are not allowed, and there are no check-in areas for oversized bags except for medical equipment or diaper bags. Permitted items, subject to inspection, include cell phones, binoculars, smaller handbags, diaper bags, medical equipment and personal water bottles. Not allowed are backpacks, large handbags, sealed bags or packages, outside food or beverages including alcohol, smoking or vaping, laser pointers or noisemakers, and video or audio recorders, including cameras. Prohibited items cannot be checked, so they go back to the car. Allow extra time for security.
For students, this is the rule that catches people: a standard school backpack is over the limit. Leave it at home or in the car. A free coat check is near concessions, but bags and backpacks cannot be stored there.
For accessibility, Salt Lake County Arts lists wheelchair and scooter spaces, aisle transfer seats, curb-to-seat assistance on request, free assisted listening devices and booster cushions. Booster cushions are for Delta Hall, first come, first served, at the coat check, mainly for children and petite adults. For wheelchair or companion seating, ASL interpreters or captioning, contact ArtTix at 801-355-2787 or info@arttix.org. Dial 711 for the Telecommunications Relay Service. Ask for help 24 to 48 hours ahead. Staff do not help with wheelchair or seat transfers. Elevators serve each level of Delta Hall, a separate elevator serves the Black Box from its lobby, and restrooms are on all levels. Sensory items are available at the Patron Services desk.
Inside the building
Salt Lake County Arts says concessions are run by Western Foods and that the on-site restaurant is Tin Angel at the Eccles. Outdoor terraces on the second and third tiers are open before, during and after performances. The page also lists the Grand Lobby, North Lobby and lounges. We did not find ticket prices or door times on the pages we read, so rely on your ticket and the box office.
What a Utah Valley family should plan
- Budget the whole night, not just the ticket: parking at $10 for many events, dinner, and a late return.
- Pick the transport first. If you are riding FrontRunner, plan the last train. If you are driving, pre-buy parking.
- Pack small. Stay under the 12 x 12 x 6 inch limit; diaper bags are an exception.
- Eat before you go. Outside food is not allowed inside. Our guide to Salt Lake City restaurants for a Utah Valley night out has options.
- Tell ArtTix early if anyone needs a wheelchair space, captioning or an interpreter.
Make a night of it
For a December evening, pair the show with Temple Square in December from Provo or Christmas in Salt Lake from Utah Valley. For other evenings out, see our date night activities in Utah Valley and, for the wider trip, our Salt Lake City day trip.
What we could not confirm
The pages we read did not give door times, ticket prices, garage rates other than the $10 event rate at Regent Street, or a drop-off location. The venue's Visit section was marked as coming soon when we checked, and the Broadway-specific visiting page did not load for us. For those details, check your ticket confirmation, ArtTix at 801-355-2787, or the venue's directions page.
