Draper, Jordan River, Oquirrh Mountain and the Salt Lake Temple: A Guide for Utah Valley Couples Getting Sealed North of the Point

Draper, Jordan River and Oquirrh Mountain for a Utah Valley sealing: drive times, closures (Jordan River shut until Dec. 7) and the Salt Lake Temple status.

Utah County has six operating temples, so most Utah Valley couples never look north. The ones who do usually have a reason: half the family lives in Sandy or Herriman, guests are flying into Salt Lake City, or the date they need is taken or closed at home. This page covers the three Salt Lake County temples that are realistic for a Utah Valley wedding party, and the one everyone asks about, the Salt Lake Temple, which is not scheduling sealings while its renovation finishes.

If you are still choosing between temples, start with Just Engaged in Utah Valley: The First 30 Days.

The short version

Draper Utah Temple

Draper is the closest Salt Lake County temple to Utah Valley. From the Mount Timpanogos temple in American Fork it is about 28 minutes by uncongested routing, and from the Saratoga Springs temple about 30. That makes it a practical midpoint for a family split across the county line.

Plan around its four-week closure from August 30 to September 27, 2027, which takes out most of September. Our guide to things to do in Draper covers the area for the afternoon gap.

Jordan River Utah Temple

If you were hoping for a Jordan River sealing this fall, the earliest open date is after December 7. For a spring 2027 date, avoid the two weeks after general conference.

Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple

Oquirrh Mountain and Jordan River are about 10 minutes apart, so families in Daybreak and the southwest valley often compare the two. Our guide to things to do in South Jordan and Daybreak covers the neighborhood.

The Salt Lake Temple: status after the renovation

The Church's temple page lists the Salt Lake Temple's status as renovation. What is known, from the Church's open houses page and TempleSquare.org:

TempleSquare.org also says downtown parking will not be available during the celebration, that West Temple and North Temple will be closed to traffic, and that a free shuttle will run from designated parking, with details to come.

For engaged couples, the open house is still worth a trip. It is the one time anyone can walk through the building, which makes it a rare chance to show a non-member parent the inside of a temple before your sealing elsewhere. Our Salt Lake Temple open house guide covers tickets and the drive from Provo, and our General Conference weekend guide covers the April crowds next door.

Planning a north-of-the-Point day from Utah Valley

Scheduling is the same everywhere. The General Handbook says members may contact the temple "after they have met with their bishop," and the Church's scheduling help says members receiving their own ordinances "should make an appointment directly with the temple." Any member can schedule at any temple; you do not have to live in its district. The Church does not publish sealing-room capacities, so ask when you call.

The guests outside. None of the three operating temples lists a visitors' center on its Church page, so guests who are not attending wait on the grounds. The handbook asks couples to invite "only close family members and friends" inside, all endowed with a current recommend. Children on temple grounds need adult supervision. Send our guest guide to relatives who have not done this before.

Rings. The handbook allows a ring exchange in the sealing room after the ceremony, not elsewhere in the temple or on the grounds. A family ring moment belongs at the reception; see our ring ceremony explainer.

The drive home for the reception. Most Utah Valley couples sealed up north still hold the reception at home. Typical uncongested drive times from the temples:

From To Lindon temple area To downtown Provo
Draper about 34 min about 38 min
Jordan River about 35 min about 39 min
Oquirrh Mountain about 38 min about 42 min

Put the luncheon near the temple and the reception at home, and the afternoon gap absorbs the drive. Our wedding luncheon guide and reception centers by city cover both ends.

Guests flying in. Salt Lake City International is north of all four temples. If most travelers are staying near the airport or in Salt Lake County, a Draper or South Jordan sealing can save them an hour of driving. Our flying into Salt Lake from Utah Valley guide covers the airport run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we be sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 2027?
Not that anyone can schedule today. The Church lists the Salt Lake Temple's status as renovation. Its public open house runs April 5 to October 1, 2027, and the Church had not announced a rededication date as of October 19, 2026. Sealings resume only after rededication.
Is the Jordan River temple open?
Not right now. The Church's page lists the Jordan River Utah Temple as closed from October 5 to December 7, 2026. Its next listed maintenance closures are April 12 to 26 and October 25 to November 9, 2027.
How far are the Salt Lake County temples from Provo?
Uncongested OpenStreetMap routing from the Provo City Center Temple: Draper about 38 minutes, Jordan River about 39, Oquirrh Mountain about 42 and the Salt Lake Temple about 55. From American Fork's Mount Timpanogos temple, Draper is about 28 minutes.
Why would a Utah Valley couple get sealed in Salt Lake County?
The usual reasons are family: one side lives in Salt Lake County, or relatives are flying into Salt Lake City and staying north. Some couples also look north when the Utah County temples they wanted are closed or booked on their date. Any member can schedule at any temple.
How do we schedule a sealing at a Salt Lake County temple?
The same way as anywhere: meet with your bishop, then call the temple directly. Phone numbers from the Church's pages: Draper 801-576-4240, Jordan River 801-254-3003, Oquirrh Mountain 801-878-3800. The Church says members receiving their own ordinances should book directly with the temple, well in advance.
When is the Draper temple closed in 2027?
As listed on the Church's page on October 19, 2026: January 1 (the end of its New Year closure), March 1 to 15, April 3, July 3, July 24, August 30 to September 27, October 2, November 24 to 25 and December 24 to 25. The four-week closure from August 30 to September 27 is the long one.
Should we go to the Salt Lake Temple open house before our wedding?
It is a good outing for an engaged couple and for non-member family, because during the open house anyone may tour the inside. Tickets are free on TempleSquare.org or the Temple Square app, with reservations open since September 1, 2026. The Church says downtown parking will not be available during the celebration; a free shuttle is planned.
Where do Utah Valley couples hold the reception after a Salt Lake County sealing?
Often back home in Utah County, the same evening, with a luncheon near the temple in between. From Draper, Utah Valley's north-end venues are about half an hour away by uncongested routing; downtown Provo is about 40 minutes.
