After 30, the two easy social engines in Utah Valley (the university and the ward) either stop running for you or were never your thing. Your coworkers have families. Your friends from school moved. And if you are single, the usual advice here starts with a church calendar. This page is for everyone who wants the other options: people of any faith or none who want to make friends, find a group, and maybe meet someone along the way.
The principle that runs through all of it is simple. One-off events rarely produce friendships; repeated contact with the same people does. So the options below are weighted toward things with a weekly or monthly rhythm.
If you are a Latter-day Saint looking for the singles wards and dances for your age, our mid-singles guide covers that side. This page leaves it out on purpose.
The ones with a schedule you can join this month
A rec league team
City recreation departments run adult leagues, and a team is the most efficient friend-maker there is: the same eight people, every week, for a season.
- Lehi's Legacy Center lists co-ed adult volleyball "open to a variety of skill levels," ages 18 and up, plus men's basketball, men's softball (10 games and a tournament) and women's volleyball in A, B and C divisions. Registration is online through the Legacy Center; questions go to 385-201-2000.
- Provo Recreation mentions adult softball and basketball on its sports page; the Recreation Center's number is 801-852-6600.
No team? Our adult rec leagues guide has a section on joining without one, and our rec centers compared page covers the seven city centers and their residency pricing.
A climbing gym, and its club
Climbing gyms are social by design: you rest between problems next to strangers working the same route, and roped climbing needs a partner.
- The Quarry (2494 N. University Parkway, Provo) says its Women's Rockreation Club meets the first and third Mondays of each month. It runs "Explore Climbing" and "Intro to Bouldering" classes, yoga Monday through Thursday from 10 to 11 p.m., and free belay certification that "usually takes about 15 minutes."
Our climbing gyms compared page covers the other gyms in the valley, with rates.
An orchestra, choir or band
Music groups rehearse weekly and perform a few times a year, which builds exactly the kind of repeated contact that turns acquaintances into friends.
- The Provo Community Orchestra welcomes adult "re-starters," recommends about two to three years of playing experience, and rehearses Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. near Provost Elementary. Tuition for a 10-week season is $97 for non-students. When we checked in October 2026, fall registration was closed except for oboe, tuba and harp, so watch for the next season.
Our community choirs, orchestras and bands guide lists the others, including groups that do not audition.
A running or cycling group
Group runs and rides meet on fixed days and welcome newcomers by habit. Our running clubs and group runs guide lists the standing weekly runs, and our cycling clubs and group rides guide covers where rides get posted and the clubs that meet in person.
A class with the same people each week
A semester-long class gives you a reason to talk to the person next to you every week.
- BYU Evening Classes are regular university courses offered in the evening. People who are not degree-seeking can apply for registration eligibility through BYU's Office of Visiting Students, and the program says "tuition rates for courses in Evening Classes are the same as for day courses."
- Community education programs through UVU, the school districts, Mountainland Technical College and the libraries are shorter commitments; our community education guide collects them.
- Hands-on classes (pottery, cooking, woodworking) put you at a shared table. Our cooking classes guide and craft nights guide list the recurring ones.
Dinner with strangers
A newer option in Utah Valley is the strangers' dinner: you sign up, an organizer books a restaurant, and you meet a small group there. In October 2026, two organizers had Utah County listings on Eventbrite:
- ADDVentures listed Provo dinners, including a "Single Awareness Dinner," at $24.71 per ticket. It describes its gatherings as "intended to be for 6 people or less," booked through an online reservation service, with the restaurant "shared with registrants only."
- Ermantourage UK listed an Orem Social Club dinner on Friday, October 23, with "a table of 10 or less."
Both are run by out-of-state organizers that operate in many cities, and you pay for your own meal on top of the ticket. Read the description before signing up: some tables are singles-only and some are mixed.
Volunteering, on a regular shift
A weekly volunteer shift at a food bank or shelter works the same way a league does: the same faces, a shared task, built-in conversation. The Church's General Handbook points members to JustServe.org for service opportunities, and its listings are open to anyone. Our volunteer service guide and our guides to food bank volunteering and trail volunteering name organizations that take regular volunteers.
Speed dating and singles events
If you are looking specifically for dating events, they exist but are thin. In our October 2026 check, the only in-person speed dating listed for Provo and Orem was a pair of events from a national operator on one Saturday. Most regular singles events in the county are Church-sponsored. For a full rundown of who runs what, see our separate guide on speed dating and singles events (listed in our singles section).
What makes it work
- Pick two, not ten. One weekly activity and one monthly one is a schedule you can keep.
- Go back the second time. The second visit is when people start to recognize you.
- Say yes to the after. The friendships form in the parking lot, at the post-game burger, at the coffee after the run.
- Host once. After a few weeks with a group, inviting three people over for dinner turns a club into friends.
- Expect Sunday to be quiet. Many local businesses and activities close on Sunday. Our Sunday things-to-do guide lists what is open.
If you are new to the valley altogether, our libraries guide is a good first stop. The Orem Public Library's events calendar, for example, includes book clubs, board games and adult programs, and lets you reserve a room, which is one way to start a group of your own.
