Provo is set up for young married couples to a degree most cities are not. Utah's median age at first marriage was 25.2 for women and 27.2 for men in the Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey, against 28.8 and 30.8 nationally, and the city's institutions reflect it: wards organized for married students, a family housing complex on BYU's campus, and a city where about half of all households are married couples. The Census estimates 17,793 married-couple households among Provo's 34,923 households in 2024 (margin of error 1,704). In Orem it is 18,843 of 30,486 (margin 1,426).
This page is about the place: where couples live, how the married wards work, and what the first year looks like here. For the paperwork (name changes, FAFSA, insurance) see our married student's guide; for money, our newlywed money guide.
Where couples live
Single students in Provo live where BYU's housing system and the per-bed contract market put them. Married couples step outside that system entirely. BYU's student housing requirement is written for single undergraduates, and married couples rent ordinary whole-unit apartments, duplexes and basements across the valley. For the apartment search itself, see married housing off campus in Provo.
That freedom raises a new question: which part of the valley? Here is how the main options compare.
Near BYU
The appeal is obvious if one of you is at BYU: walk or bike to class, no parking permit fight, the married student wards close by. The trade-off is price per square foot and older buildings. On campus, BYU's Wymount Terrace and Wyview Park are the low-cost option, but they have waiting lists, and part of Wymount is being rebuilt. Our married and family housing guide covers eligibility and the list, and our news report explains the Wymount rebuild. For the streets around campus, see our BYU-area neighborhood guide.
Downtown and central Provo
Center Street's restaurants within walking distance, and the Provo FrontRunner station for a spouse who commutes north. Our downtown Provo guide covers rents and walkability, and our page on the Tree Streets explains the owner-occupancy rule that shaped that neighborhood's rentals.
North and west Provo
Away from campus, more of the housing is single-family homes, some with basement apartments. See Grandview and Edgemont for north Provo and the bench, and west Provo for the six neighborhoods between I-15 and Utah Lake.
Orem
Orem sits between BYU and UVU, with I-15 along its west side, and a higher share of married-couple households than Provo in the Census estimates above. The Census Bureau's 2024 median gross rent is higher in Orem ($1,416, margin $106) than in Provo ($1,255, margin $127), though medians mix every unit size. Our Orem neighborhoods guide breaks the city down block by block.
Farther out
Springville, Spanish Fork, Vineyard and Saratoga Springs offer newer townhomes and larger units within a commute. They make most sense when one spouse already works south or west, or when you are ready to trade a longer drive for a second bedroom. Our Springville neighborhoods and Vineyard neighborhoods guides are good starting points.
Before you sign
Check three things that newlyweds tend to miss:
- Which ward the address falls in, if it matters to you. The Church's Meetinghouse Locator shows it before you sign.
- Who provides power and water. In Provo, the city itself is the power, water and sewer company, and our Provo utilities guide explains how to start service.
- The commute at the hour you will drive it. A 12-minute map estimate can double at 8 a.m. on University Parkway.
How the married wards work
Latter-day Saint congregations are assigned by address. Marriage changes which kinds you can belong to. The General Handbook (37.3.1) says members "do not attend a young single adult unit when they marry," so your singles ward ends with the wedding.
What replaces it depends on whether either of you is a student.
Married student wards
The Handbook (37.4) describes married student stakes and wards as created "to serve the married student members who live close to a university or college." A married student ward needs at least 125 members, and a married student stake at least 1,500 members and five wards. Whether your address falls in one is something the Meetinghouse Locator will show you.
Membership has two conditions. You must be married students, and you must live within the ward's boundaries. Even then, the Handbook (37.4.1) says "married students may choose to be members of the married student ward or their geographic unit." It is your choice.
Leadership follows the same pattern as young single adult wards (37.3.2 and 37.4.2): the bishop is a married man of "mature judgment and experience" who may be called from outside the stake's boundaries, while other leaders and teachers are called from among the ward's own members. That means a 22-year-old can be teaching Sunday School or serving in a Relief Society or elders quorum presidency soon after moving in.
What a married student ward feels like
Because membership is limited to married students, everyone is in roughly the same stage: in school, recently married, on a student budget. And because couples leave when they graduate or move, the membership turns over with the academic calendar. Friendships can form quickly when everyone is new at once, and they scatter at graduation.
Geographic family wards
Off-campus addresses, and couples who are not students, fall in a regular family ward: every age from infants to widowers, with longtime residents who have lived on the street for decades. Newlyweds in a family ward may be among the youngest adults in the room.
Neither kind of ward is better. They are different, and your address usually decides. Our explainer on how wards work covers callings, ministering and the knock at the door, and our ward-finding guide covers the locator and moving records.
Moving your records
The Handbook's records chapter says the clerk moves membership records to the new ward when members move, and a new ward's clerk can request records that have not been sent. In practice: attend your new ward, find the clerk after the meeting, give your names and former wards, and the records follow.
If one of you is not a member
Church attendance is voluntary. Our guide to visiting a church in Provo covers the other congregations in the valley.
The first year, as a couple, in this valley
Provo's calendar is built around students and families. Newlyweds sit between the two, and the city looks different from that seat. Marking the first anniversary has its own list: first-year anniversary ideas.
The first fall. The city fills back up in late August. If one of you is a student, you are juggling a new household and a new semester at once. Keep weekends light for the first month. When you want to get out, our cheap date ideas list works on a student budget, and free things to do in Provo costs nothing at all.
The first Christmas. The first holiday season is when two families' traditions collide. Decide early whose house you will be at, and when. If you stay in Provo, our Christmas in Provo guide covers the lights and concerts.
The first winter. Learn the canyons and the snow before you need to. Our winter driving guide covers tires and chains.
Making couple friends. Your single friends stay in singles wards and singles activities. Couple friendships usually start in the new ward, at work, or through a recurring activity. Our guide to making friends in Provo has ideas that work for couples too.
Date nights that last. A standing weekly date is easier to keep than a special one. Our date night activities guide and our list of date night restaurants cover the range from free to splurge.
The first anniversary. If you plan to return to the temple where you were sealed, check its closure dates first. As listed on the Church's temple pages in October 2026, the Provo City Center Temple is closed November 29 to December 13, 2027, and the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple is closed the same weeks. A December 2026 couple hoping to return on the date may need to go a few days later. Our anniversary-friendly date ideas work any week of the year.
When children come. Childcare, insurance, housing size and income all change at once. Our guide for student parents at BYU and UVU covers that stage.
Three things nobody mentions
- You are on two calendars. If one of you is at BYU and the other at UVU, your semesters start and end on different dates. Our guide to getting married during the semester lays them side by side.
- Your address is your social life. In Provo, the ward your address falls in shapes who you meet more than almost anything else. Choose the apartment with that in mind.
- Everyone moves at graduation. The friendships you make in a married student ward are real, and they will scatter across the country within a few years. Keep in touch on purpose.
